Spring is a time for new growth. That's true both in nature
and in business. Indeed, at Gdovin Personnel, we've launched a
new division in response to our clients' demand. The new
division is recruiting registered nurses and licensed
practical nurses for permanent positions in York County. We
developed this program in response to demand from our clients
and the sheer demographics of the nursing shortage.
What our clients are experiencing is part of a huge
statewide and national trend: it's difficult to find
qualified, skilled nurses. This year, Pennsylvania is expected
to face a shortage of more than 10,000 registered nurses,
according to a report by the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services. By 2010, the state's RN shortfall will climb
to 17,000.
We'll be working hard to find and place the best nurses -
the same way we work hard for all our clients to find workers,
whether the need is for a qualified medical or administrative
staff member.
As always, I'd love to hear from you. If you have a comment
or question, feel free to email me with your feedback.

Computers are a fixture of both our businesses and our
homes. That's why it's so alarming to read about all the
threats swirling around in cyberspace. We need few reminders
about the dangers lurking out there. But we can all use a
little help in figuring out what we should do about them.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks. That,
unfortunately, sums up the attitude of too many employers
toward hiring older workers. Yet, older workers are often the
best workers - and the most eager to learn. This article
demolishes some of the common myths surrounding the over-50

| The numbers... | |
Statistics
you should know...
- The unemployment rate declined in York County in
December 2004 to 4.1 percent from 4.2 percent in November,
according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Half of all Americans are satisfied with their jobs,
down from 60 percent in 1995, according to a report by The
Conference Board. The biggest decline in satisfaction came
among workers aged 35 to 44: from 60.9 percent to 49.2
percent.
- According to a study by Northwestern National Life, 40
percent of workers report that their job is "very or
extremely stressful." Any of our readers fall into that
category?
- In 2004, only 4% of companies with more than 500
employees offered so-called consumer-directed health
insurance plans, which aim to save money by making workers
more responsible for their health-care spending, according
to Mercer Human Resource Consulting. The numbers could rise:
14% of such companies said they might begin offering the
plans in 2005 or 2006.

C.S.
Davidson Inc.
Originally founded in 1923, C.S. Davidson Inc. may be more
than 80 years old. But it's still growing. The civil and
structural engineering firm has offices in York and Gettysburg
and is preparing to open a third office in Lancaster,
according to Linda Davidson, the firm's business manager.
C.S. Davidson draws on Gdovin Personnel Inc. to fill
administrative positions both on a temporary and permanent
basis, Davidson said. "The reason we keep going back to them
for those positions is because I feel like Ann understands the
profile of the type of person that we look for, that works
well in this particular office. I want a high level of polish
and sophistication."
The firm requires high-caliber candidates who can work well
with an educated, professional staff and clientele, Davidson
said. After all, C.S. Davidson has a reputation to uphold.
It's won recognition as one of the best places to work in
Pennsylvania for the last five years.
"Every time you go to a new recruiter, you have to explain
what civil engineering is. It takes a lot of time," Davidson
said. "I have felt that Gdovin listens, and they do a good job
of screening. They only send us people who are viable
candidates. It saves me a lot of
time." | | | |
