Every jobseeker understands the importance of preparing for an interview. The following resources will help. But if you have questions or need guidance, don't hesitate to contact a Gdovin employment coordinator.
Interview Do's and Don'ts
DO:
- Dress professionally. A Gdovin Coordinator will be able to answer any specific questions about attire.
- Arrive early. Chances are, you will not get the job if you are late.
- Smile and make eye contact. Act as though you are happy to be there, even if you are not.
- Listen. Listening well is just as important as answering questions well. Pay attention.
- Sit properly. Do not slouch.
- Learn about the job. Find out why the position for which you are applying is open.
- Get details. Make sure that the interviewer describes the position in the beginning of the interview so that you can provide specific details of your qualifications.
- Be determined. Show that you want the job and make sure it's worth the interviewer's time to talk with you.
- Ask questions. If you're unsure about something or want to learn more, ask. Interviews are mutual learning opportunities for the employer and the jobseeker.
- Get a decision date. Ask when the company expects to reach a decision for your applied position.
DON'T:
- Have a weak handshake. A firm grip shows that you're confident.
- Smoke or chew gum. This will make you seem unprofessional.
- Answer with simple "yes" or "no" responses. Make sure to explain your answers, but do so as concisely as possible.
- Exaggerate or lie. Be honest about your accomplishments and your background.
- Criticize past employers. Regardless of your feelings or the facts, negative comments will reflect badly upon you.
- Ask about compensation. That includes salary, bonuses, vacations, or insurance.
- Reveal your preferred salary. In most cases, you should keep this to yourself. Ask your Gdovin Coordinator for advice on discussing compensation.
- Use your interviewer's first name. Keep things formal unless you are asked to speak on a first-name basis.
