York Agency Begins Recruiting Nurses in Response to Client Demand

(York, PA) - Nurses are in short supply - a trend that will continue for years, according to the state's Health Department. For health practices and hospitals, hiring new nurses increasingly requires a helping hand, particularly at small clinics without the resources needed to find qualified candidates.

In response to client demand, Gdovin Personnel Inc. has launched a new service to find registered nurses and licensed practical nurses for openings in York County, a move that expands the company's healthcare division. In 2000, Gdovin Personnel became the first staffing agency in the county to begin placing non-clinical staff in medical settings, said Ann Gdovin-Hake, chief executive officer of the Springettsbury Township company.

"The placement of RNs and LPNs is a natural - and much needed - extension of our business," Gdovin said. "Our clients in the medical community struggle to recruit nurses on their own. We're moving into this segment of the workforce to help them overcome the significant challenges in recruiting nurses."

How big is the challenge? This year, Pennsylvania is expected to have just 91 percent of the RNs it needs, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service. By 2010, the state's shortfall of registered nurses will climb to 17,000, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The resulting competition for skilled providers is toughest on small organizations with modest resources.

Employers spend $2,821 on average to hire an RN, according to Bernard Hodes Group, a health-care recruitment firm. That's higher than the cost of hiring related health professionals such as physical therapists.

Locally, the competitive market has spurred area nurses to test the waters with new employers who may be more flexible or offer higher wages, according to Gdovin-Hake. The cost of hiring and competition for nursing candidates are driving Central Pennsylvania's healthcare providers to seek help from qualified staffing agencies.

"It's Gdovin Personnel's sole mission to find qualified workers," Gdovin-Hake said. "We work with a huge pool of job applicants on a day-to-day basis. Healthcare providers have begun to realize the benefits of tapping into that pool and into our experience dealing with the identification and screening of qualified healthcare applicants."

Gdovin Personnel Inc. provides high-quality staffing solutions to employers in medical and clerical fields. The company, pronounced "DOH-vin," has been helping Central Pennsylvania employers find temporary and permanent workers since 1996. In 2000, Gdovin became the first agency based in York to created a division serve the region's healthcare providers. For more information, visit www.gdovin.com.
